Almost every year from 1985 until 2018 I designed at least one new production with the writer, director and choreographer, Teresa Early MBE, at her base in Peckham. In the early days her company, New Peckham Varieties, was based at the St. Luke's Centre on the infamous North Peckham Estate. Later it moved to Havil Hall behind Southwark Town Hall where it was finally renamed Theatre Peckham. Much hard work and fundraising under her leadership led to the opening of a new purpose-built theatre and studio space in 2016. Teresa retired in 2019.
The ethos of Teresa's Theatre Peckham was 'an open door policy...offering accessible professional training and opportunities in the performing arts to young Londoners.' As alumnus John Boyega put it, 'I admire Theatre Peckham's continued mission to increase diversity in the creative industries, inspiring young people like myself to be the change we want to see..' (Theatre Weekly April 12 2018)
